I first started with Crossroads in 1991, as the Sefton Crossroads Scheme was just beginning. I set up the office, recruited the first Carer Support Workers and built the scheme up from scratch. Within 6 months the size of the scheme doubled and went from strength to strength. In April 2005 as part of the merger with Liverpool Crossroads, my role changed to Care Manager for Sefton/children in Liverpool based in the office in Breckfield. I first came into contact with Crossroads Caring for Carers when a Support Worker came to support my sister, so that I could have a break. She has Criduchat Syndrome which means she requires a specialist carer support package. I completed my work experience in the Crossroads Caring for Carers office and since then I have started to do volunteer work for them, by helping around the office while I am on my holidays. I have also taken part in Young Carers activities including the Summer Pops Festival and a day trip to North Wales.

In March 2004 Crossroads Caring for Carers inaugurated a new scheme to provide a social club for its Carers in Liverpool. Initially it was arranged to have a meeting on the first Wednesday of each month. I have been involved in the scheme as part of my voluntary work with Crossroads.

So far, we have had some success and hope in time to encourage more carers to attend these meetings. You are welcome to let us have your suggestions and ideas that may bring some pleasure and enjoyment to members. I have been a Carer in the past and know it’s not easy, but I hope, we can help in some way by providing this social club.
